PNR (Passenger Name Record) is a unique 10-digit number assigned by Indian Railways to every train ticket booking. It acts as your complete travel record — storing train number, journey date, origin and destination stations, passenger names, class of travel, berth or seat number, and current booking status.
Checking your PNR status tells you exactly where your booking stands: whether your ticket is Confirmed (CNF) with a berth allocated, Reservation Against Cancellation (RAC) giving you boarding rights with a partial berth, or on the Waiting List (WL) awaiting confirmation as other passengers cancel.
Checking PNR status on CheckMyPNR takes under 30 seconds — no login or app required:
Type your 10-digit PNR in the input field at the top of this page. Find it at the top-left of your printed ticket or at the top of your e-ticket.
An IRCTC security captcha image appears. Type the characters shown — this is a one-time security step required by Indian Railways for each enquiry.
Your real-time status appears instantly — booking status (CNF/RAC/WL), coach number, berth number, train details, departure and arrival times — sourced live from indianrail.gov.in.
Indian Railways uses several status codes in PNR results. Here is what each one means for your journey:
Seat allotted — coach and berth number assigned.
Half Side-Lower Berth. Valid for boarding. May upgrade to full berth.
From origin station. Best confirmation chances among all WL types.
Intermediate stations. Lower confirmation chances than GNWL.
For remote intermediate stations. Limited quota.
Tatkal quota waiting list. Rarely gets confirmed.
Ticket has been cancelled. Refund processed.
If your PNR is on WL, keep checking status regularly as cancellations move the queue. Low GNWL numbers (WL/1 to WL/10) generally have good confirmation chances, especially on popular routes. If your ticket does not reach CNF or RAC by chart preparation time (4 hours before departure), it is automatically cancelled and a full refund minus a small cancellation fee is returned to your original payment method.
Tatkal quota waitlist (TQWL) and Pooled Quota waitlist (PQWL) have low confirmation chances. Consider booking an alternate train or travel date if your WL number is high or the quota type is PQWL/TQWL.
PNR (Passenger Name Record) is a unique 10-digit number assigned by Indian Railways to every train ticket. It stores your complete journey details — train number, departure date, source and destination stations, passenger names, class, berth/seat number, and current booking status. Your PNR is printed at the top-left corner of a physical ticket or shown at the top of your e-ticket.
For printed tickets, the PNR is at the top-left corner of the ticket, above the passenger details. For e-tickets booked via IRCTC, the PNR appears at the top of the booking confirmation email and on the IRCTC app booking history. It is always a 10-digit number.
CNF (Confirmed) means your ticket is confirmed with a specific berth or seat allotted. For example, "3A/B4/34/LB" means 3rd AC, Coach B4, Berth 34, Lower Berth. Once confirmed, your seat is guaranteed and you can board the train directly.
RAC (Reservation Against Cancellation) means you have boarding rights with a half Side-Lower Berth shared with one other passenger. You can travel on an RAC ticket — the TTE may allot a full berth if vacancies arise. You cannot be denied boarding on a valid RAC ticket.
WL (Waiting List) means your ticket is not yet confirmed. As other passengers cancel, WL numbers decrease. Low GNWL numbers (WL 1–10) generally have good chances of confirmation, especially on popular routes. WL tickets not confirmed by chart preparation are auto-cancelled with a refund.
GNWL (General Waiting List) applies to journeys from the origin station and has the best confirmation chances. PQWL (Pooled Quota) covers intermediate-station passengers with lower quota. RLWL (Remote Location) is for remote intermediate stations with very limited quota. GNWL > RLWL > PQWL in terms of confirmation probability.
Chart is prepared 4 hours before the train's scheduled departure. After chart preparation: confirmed passengers get final coach/berth numbers, WL tickets that did not reach CNF/RAC are auto-cancelled and refunded, and no further booking or cancellation changes are allowed.
"Chart Not Prepared" is normal more than 4 hours before departure. It means the final seating arrangement is still pending. If you are on RAC or low WL, keep checking — your status may improve to CNF once the chart is prepared.
Send your 10-digit PNR to 139 as an SMS (example: "PNR 1234567890"). You'll receive the current status by return SMS. Alternatively, send the same message to 5676747 for the IRCTC SMS service. You can also call 139 to check via IVR.
A PNR is queryable online from booking date until approximately 3 days after the journey date, after which it is archived. Save your berth number, coach, and train details from your e-ticket before this window closes.
No. CheckMyPNR does not store your PNR number or any personal travel details. Each query fetches data live from indianrail.gov.in in real time. Only an anonymised hash (not the actual PNR) is used for aggregate statistics to improve the service.
Yes, completely free. No registration, no login, and no app download required. Just enter your 10-digit PNR, solve the IRCTC captcha, and get instant live status — sourced directly from Indian Railways.
