Two completely different things:
PNR Status (this tool)
- About your booking: confirmed or waiting list, coach, berth
- Needs your 10-digit PNR
- Status changes leading up to chart preparation
Train Running Status / Live Train Status
- About the train's current location
- Needs only the train number (not your PNR)
- Shows: current station, last halt, delay, expected arrival at upcoming stations
- Available for any train, regardless of whether you have a ticket
Most passengers check both:
- PNR status to know seat status
- Running status to know when to leave for the station / collect arriving passengers
