Are there any Covid travel protocols still active?

Most Covid-era restrictions on Indian Railways were lifted by mid-2023. Trains run at full capacity, no mandatory tests/masks. However, individual states may impose restrictions during outbreaks; always check current notifications.

Covid-era rules — most lifted:

Currently NOT required:

  • Vaccination certificate
  • RT-PCR / Antigen test
  • Mandatory mask wearing in trains
  • Aarogya Setu app
  • Distancing seat blocks

Trains run at:

  • 100% normal capacity
  • All classes
  • Full pantry / catering

However:

  • During outbreak periods, certain states impose temporary restrictions (especially North-East / J&K).
  • Some long-distance trains in specific zones may have local protocols (rare).
  • International passengers entering India may have separate rules at airport — railway side has none.

Recommended:

  • Carry hand sanitizer for personal use.
  • Wear mask if you're medically vulnerable or unwell.
  • Check IRCTC announcements for any special advisory.

Travel is essentially back to pre-Covid normal as of late 2024.
