Tatkal vs Premium Tatkal — which to choose?

Tatkal is fixed-price with chance of waitlist. Premium Tatkal is dynamic-priced (rises as seats sell) but always confirms. Choose Tatkal if you can wait for confirmation; Premium if you need a guaranteed seat.

Both open one day before journey at the same time (10 AM AC, 11 AM non-AC).

Regular Tatkal:

  • Fixed extra charge above base fare (max 30%).
  • May go to TQWL waitlist.
  • Cancellation: extra charge non-refundable.
  • Quota size: ~10-30% of seats per coach.

Premium Tatkal:

  • Dynamic pricing — fare rises every few seats sold.
  • No waitlist — only confirmed.
  • Cancellation: limited / no refund.
  • Quota size: smaller (~5-10% per coach).

Choose Premium Tatkal if:

  • You absolutely need to travel that day
  • You're booking very early in the window

Choose Regular Tatkal if:

  • Some flexibility on date / class
  • You're price-sensitive
  • Willing to risk TQWL

Tip: Check both quotas right after window opens. Sometimes regular Tatkal sells out faster (lower price) and Premium remains.
